What are the benefits of learning ballet?

As dancers, we are always learning. Ballet is a timeless art form, constantly on the strive for perfection.  It takes a lot of work to see progression in your dancing. Many of us often find ourselves working on the same movement or concept for weeks! Although this can be frustrating, the reward is in finally conquering that step or concept, showing yourself that hard work pays off. The benefits of learning ballet are many! Let’s talk about some of them.

Patience and Discipline

The process that we go through as dancers takes patience and discipline: patience in trusting the process, and discipline in working hard to get the results that you want. From personal experience, these two lessons have been beneficial to me both inside and outside of the studio. For example, having discipline has helped me push myself to go to the gym when I’m tired because I know I’ll be happy with the end result. In addition, having patience has helped give me the mindset of “it might not happen today, but it will happen.” That might sound simple, but sometimes it’s all I need to remind myself to trust the process, believing that as long as I work hard and do my part, the results will reflect that.

Body Awareness, Endurance, and Strength

One of the more obvious benefits of ballet is the physical aspect. Due to the nature of ballet technique, dancers who train regularly develop stable cores, graceful upper bodies, and beautiful long legs, all the while building lean muscles that are incredibly strong. Ballet also helps with endurance as well as body-awareness. The will-power to persevere even when it’s hard can be the changing point in which dancers are able to push themselves to next the level in their technique. Once developed, these physical and mental benefits will carry over to other sports/activities in your life. As someone who is active outdoors, I know that ballet has made me an all-around stronger athlete.

Finding a Community

Being dedicated to ballet takes up a lot of your free time. For this reason, it is important as a dancer to find a community of support in which you feel both included and valued. Sharing love for a beautiful art form like ballet can connect you to other dancers in a special way. We all train hard together, and consequently know how much effort and dedication it takes. If you are fortunate enough to have a supportive dance community, you can take comfort in knowing that your fellow dancers will stand by your side through your ballet journey!

The list goes on and on when it comes to the benefits of learning ballet: Creativity, confidence building, musicality, and so on. However, I have personally found that discipline, patience, and a strong, healthy body have been the key benefits as a dancer that I will carry with me for life.

Let’s dance!
